The Noble
Great Dhāraṇī
Homage to all buddhas and bodhisattvas.
Thus did I hear at one time. The Blessed One resided in the city of Śrāvastī, in the forest of Jeta, in the grove of Anāthapiṇḍada, together with a great monastic retinue of one thousand two hundred fifty monks. At that time, the elder Ānanda spent the rainy season in Sāketaka, and when the three months of the rainy season were over, he put on and donned monastic robes, held on to his monastic robes and alms bowl, and set out toward where the Blessed One was residing. When he arrived, he bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Once the elder Ānanda had sat down on one side, the Blessed One said this to him:
“Ānanda! For the welfare, benefit, happiness, strength, and life force of all sentient beings, uphold these mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī. Take, receive, recite, master, and memorize them! Why? The mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī, Ānanda, are difficult to obtain, for it is difficult to obtain the appearance in the world of thus-gone, worthy, fully awakened, perfect buddhas; it is rare like the udumbara flower. Therefore, uphold, take, receive, recite, memorize, and master them!
“Ānanda, whichever faithful son or daughter of good family upholds, takes, recites, memorizes, and masters the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī will not die an untimely death, be it by the sword, by poison, by fire, by water, or by royal punishment. Such a person will never be harmed by any god, asura, nāga, wind god, garuḍa, gandharva, kinnara, mahoraga, yakṣa, rākṣasa, preta, piśāca, kumbhāṇḍa, pūtana, kaṭapūtana, bhūta, apasmāra, unmāda, ostāraka, chāyā, witchcraft, magic, or sorcery. Such a person will never be harmed by any human or nonhuman being. Such a person will never be harmed by sorcery involving spells, deeds of speech, or deeds of mind. Such a person will never contract fever, whether of one day, two days, three days, or four days, whether constant, demonic, or sudden, or whether caused by wind, bile, phlegm, or a combination of these.
“Now, the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī are as follows:
tadyathā jvale mahājvale jvalane mahājvalane tapane mahātapane jvalite ugge bugge saṃpade mahāsaṃpade cakre mahācakre, protect, protect me and all sentient beings from all dangers, all harms, all illnesses, svāhā.
“These mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī, Ānanda, were spoken by seventy-seven crores of perfect buddhas, and now I, too, have spoken them and take delight in them. Ānanda, whichever son or daughter of good family takes, memorizes, recites, keeps in mind, and masters the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī shall remember up to seven former births and shall never forsake the resolve of awakening.
“Now, the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī are as follows:
tadyathā aṇḍe maṇḍe kṣame kṣamame dhānase vadane adane hule mahāhule kare gambhīre duṣpuṣṭe, protect, protect me and all sentient beings from all dangers, all harms, all illnesses, svāhā.
“These mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī, Ānanda, were spoken by eighty-eight crores of perfect buddhas, and now I, too, have spoken them and take delight in them. Ānanda, whichever son or daughter of good family takes, memorizes, recites, keeps in mind, and masters the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī shall remember up to fourteen former births and shall never forsake the resolve of awakening.
“Now, the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī are as follows:
tadyathā aṭṭe vaṭṭe agge vagge ṭhakke ṭhakke dhakke dhāradhagake ṭakke ṭakke akosi sakosi mahākosi ili mili tili mili raurave mahāraurave bhūtaṃgame mahābhūtaṃgame bhūtaparāyaṇe timigise mahātimigise saṃbhāve mahāsaṃbhāve, protect, protect me and all sentient beings from all dangers, all harms, all illnesses, svāhā.
“These mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī, Ānanda, were spoken by ninety-nine crores of perfect buddhas, and now I, too, have spoken them and take delight in them. Ānanda, whichever son or daughter of good family takes, memorizes, recites, keeps in mind, and masters the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī shall remember up to twenty-one former births and shall never forsake the resolve of awakening.
“If a son or daughter of good family, Ānanda, uses the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī to protect even a desiccated tree and safeguards it, shields it, and defends it, performs a pacifying rite, a benediction rite, a protection from weapons, a protection from poisons, and a healing of poisons, seals the boundaries, seals the sky, and seals the earth, and ties a protective cord on it, then the roots, branches, leaves, shoots, flowers, fruits of that tree will grow back. How much more so if one does this for a body endowed with consciousness! An exception, Ānanda, is if former deeds have already begun maturing.
“The sun and the moon, Ānanda, may eventually fall upon the earth, no matter how powerful they are, no matter how mighty they are, no matter how lofty they are. The king of mountains, Ānanda, may eventually shake in its place. The four oceans, Ānanda, may eventually dry out and disappear, no matter how deep they are, no matter how wide they are, no matter how powerful they are, no matter how mighty they are. This great earth, Ānanda, may eventually split into a thousand pieces, water may lose its moistness, fire may lose its heat, and wind may lose its coolness. However, the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī will never fail.
“Any being, Ānanda, be they a god, a nāga, an asura, a garuḍa, a kinnara, a mahoraga, a yakṣa, a rākṣasa, a preta, a piśāca, a kumbhāṇḍa, a pūtana, a kaṭapūtana, a bhūta, a brāhmaṇa, a rākṣasa, or a chāyā, human or nonhuman, who should transgress the mantra-words of the Great Dhāraṇī, to wit—
tadyathā aggile caggile valle malle ohāni mohāni jambhani stambhani, protect, protect me and all sentient beings, svāhā—
their heads will be split into seven pieces by the great king Dhṛtarāṣṭra with a discus made of blazing, ferociously radiant, intensely gleaming iron, its fierceness focused into one point. Their heads will be split into seven pieces by the great kings Virūḍhaka, Virūpākṣa, and Vaiśravaṇa, too, with discuses made of blazing, ferociously radiant, intensely gleaming iron, their fierceness focused into one point. The lord of the gods, Indra, too, will strike them with his thunderbolt. Their heads will be split into seven pieces by the lord of the guhyakas, Vajrapāṇi, too, with his blazing, ferociously radiant, intensely gleaming thunderbolt, its fierceness focused into one point. They shall not gain residence in his royal palace in Aḍakavatī; their heads will split into seven pieces like a cluster of clove basil.”
Thus spoke the Blessed One, and the elder Ānanda and all the gods, humans, asuras, garuḍas, and gandharvas were delighted, and they praised the speech of the Blessed One.
“The Great Dhāraṇī” is complete.
